Dexter Cows Now On Snipe Meadow
We are so excited to announce the arrival of 8 Dexter Cows and 1 month old calf yesterday afternoon who are now all happily grazing in Snipe Meadow.
Kimberly, Molasses, Melody, Monsoon, Bluebell, Nettle, Bilberry, Violet and calf will be with us for the rest of the summer.
Dexter cattle are a great conservation grazing breed as they are small but hardy mountain cattle, used to living outside in all weathers. Conservation grazing creates vegetation at different heights, and small areas of bare ground. This makes it suitable for a wide range of wildlife in different habitats. It allows wildflowers to grow, flower and set seed each year.
Thank you to local farmer Craig Baxter from Marshall's Farm, Farcet for agreeing to graze them on Snipe Meadow and Helena Darragh & Bruce Gardiner from The Wildlife Trust (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire) for helping to arrange it.
